Il Monastero di Santa Caterina or the Monastery of the Transfiguration is a sixth-century monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt, at the mouth of a canyon inaccessible. Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, is the oldest Christian monastery still in existence. In 2002 he was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its architecture and why Byzantine sacred to three great religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The monastery also houses a vast collection of ancient manuscripts and icons. In particular, it has the largest library of ancient texts of the Byzantine after the Vatican City: the largest and best preserved today. In it are more than 3,500 volumes in greek, Coptic, Arabic, Armenian, Jewish, Georgian, Syriac and other languages. Among these is the oldest surviving Bible, dated to the sixth century BC. Also in it are unique works of art, including mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, religious vestments, chalices and reliquaries.
